PSORIASIS

> What is Psoriasis?
Psoriasis is a non-contagious chronic skin complaint, the symptoms of which are normally raised red patches covered by a white flaky layer. The most common form of the disease is 'plaque psoriasis' - 80% of sufferers have this type. It can appear anywhere on the body but is most common on the scalp, knees, elbows and ankles.

> What are its Causes?
Although the exact cause is unknown, it is generally thought to be an immune system malfunction whereby the growth cycle of skin cells is accelerated to a level where the body is unable to dispose of them normally. This overproduction of skin cells is responsible for the condition. Due to a genetic component, some people are more prone to psoriasis than others. Quite often the condition is triggered by an external factor such as emotional stress, skin damage or a reaction to drugs.

> Can Psoriasis be Cured?
Sadly no permanent cure has been found and all that can be done is to relieve the symptoms. The most important thing when treating the symptoms of psoriasis is to keep the skin moist. Moisturisers based on petroleum products are best avoided as they tend to prevent the proper functioning of the skin. Healthy skin needs oxygen and needs to be fed from both inside and out. Sufferers from psoriasis should pay particular attention to their diet, ensuring adequate nourishment for the skin.
In our daily lives we are surrounded by all sorts of hazards that can harm the skin. These can be minmised by following a few simple rules:

  1. Do not wash the skin and hair with ordinary bar soap or anything containing harsh detergents (most shampoos and liquid soaps contain SLS, a proven skin irritant).
  2. Avoid creams and moisturisers based on petrochemicals. These give the illusion that the skin is being moisturised but actually dry it out by forming an impermeable barrier preventing absorption of moisture from the atmosphere and expulsion of waste products through the pores.
  3. Only use soaps, shampoos, creams and lotions based on natural ingredients from the plant kingdom.
